Musings of a South African Bookworm

sharing my love of books with a special focus on SA literature

The Local Lit Scene

on February 25, 2025

It’s been an age since I posted here.

Last week when I went out for my morning coffee, I met local South African author Irma Venter, who knew me from my blog, and subsequently inspired me to get back on here. (Thanks Irma). Post brain juice I remembered  I had read one of her books, Man Down, which I thoroughly enjoyed. You can read about it here.

Back in the day I used to be a prolific blogger, and while this book blog has been through many transformations, and abandoned for a while,  I am still an avid book lover, still reading local.  It seems fitting to share an update. My last post was from 2020, yes, the dystopian year. Peculiar to think back to that time. Hard lockdown, lockdown, masks, sanitisers and staying sane through the chaos. Life has mostly returned to normal now. Saying that, what even is normal these days? But, I am not here for politics, I am here for the books.

These days I can mostly be found on Instagram @musingsofasouthafricanbookworm, you’ll notice I have updated the name of this book to the same title though in my heart of hearts, this blog will always be The Book Club Blog – something I started with my sister many moons ago.  I have also recently started a podcast called The Local Lit Scene which you can find on Spotify. It follows my love of South African authors, and the books they write but now I interview them ‘in person’. I’ll tell you how I came by that idea.

I was on holiday in St James, Cape Town and I had recently finished reading Tanya Meeson’s novel The Fulcrum. A book which I subsequently loved, but also needed answers for. With the socials being what they are now, I tagged the author in a post, we got chatting and I asked for an interview. When she said yes, I got to thinking on what would be the best platform to utilise this. While strolling the beach front walk from Muizenburg to St James, the answer popped into my head. I could start a podcast! The name arrived there and then ,The Local Lit Scene, and the idea would be to celebrate the diversity of our South African authors beyond our past. If you’ve been here a while you will already know that I love SA fiction. This is not new information. So when I  decided on a podcast, it seemed like the perfect solution, I mean does anyone still read blogs these days? Well, we’ll soon see.. but I thought a podcast would be a little more intimate and authentic a setting in which to chat to the author.  And so, I started one and if you have not yet taken a listen, please do. I would love to hear your thoughts.

The authors I have interviewed so far are:

Tanya Meeson

Sven Axelrad

Alistair Mackay

Nicole Rimensberger

Mia Aderne

Zayaan Shroeder

Shameez Patel Papathanasio

And the latest is a Spicy Romance Panel where we chat all things spice.

Should you wish to be featured on my podcast, please get in touch and I can send you details.

And thats that for now. I am off to the library, I need to return the books I haven’t yet managed to read. Between work, life and podcasting, there doesn’t leave all that much time to peruse the pages at leisure… Which is ok for now, Winter will be here soon, the season is already in flux,  and then, I know I will read more.
